Buy a boxed edition of Snow Leopard 10.6 Get an email copy of Lion 10.7 Get an email copy of Mountain Lion 10.8. The email edition comes with a special download code you can use for the Mac App Store. Note, that to install the Lion or Mountain Lion, your Mac needs to be running Snow Leopard so you can install the newer OS on top of it.

iMovie


iMovie is a video editing software developed by Apple that allows users to edit their own videos. It comes pre-installed on all new Macs and the current version is iMovie '11. It is fairly easy to learn and the application offers many templates for ease of editing. Users can add video, photos, sound effects, music, transitions, and other effects of their choice to their projects. View Apple's iMovie video showcase to find out more.

The iMovie '11 Project Book is a good resource to get new users started or give experienced users new ideas on how to use iMovie.

Switch to a Mac outlines what iMovie allows users to do:

History
iMovie was first released in 1999. Since iMovie 3, the third version of the product, iMovie has been bundled in Apple's iLife suite. When iMovie '08 was released, it was highly criticized. Among other things, it did not include a timeline, it's audio features were unflattering, and Apple removed all of the special effects in effort to produce movies quickly. Customers were so unhappy that Apple offered free downloads of iMovie 6 HD, their previous version, to those customers who bought iMovie '08. The most recent update includes ability to use the application on the iPad 2, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, and iPod Touch 4th generation.

Current Software
Apple released it's newest edition of iMovie (named iMovie '11) on October 20, 2010. The upgrade brought many new features to the table. The most exciting of which is the advanced audio editing controls. The current version is 9.0.4 and has a download size of 585.02 MB. The software can be purchased from Apple for $14.99.
Mac World takes a closer look at the newest edition of iMovie. Their Pros and Cons list is a little tech specific, but gives educated users an idea of what to look for in the newest edition.

    • Pre-processing and import transcoding can be time-consuming
Examples of iMovie
The first video is a good example project because it is one that was made to show the different abilities of iMovie. I like how the user demonstrated different effects and used many different font styles throughout the project. He used the scrapbook project theme as a template for his short video.

iMovie Trailer

This second example is a good example of using iMovie's trailer feature. The creator of this project used clips from the popular British television show Top Gear to highlight one specific episode the crew took to Africa. The music, slide transitions, text effects, and clip timings are already pre-set; the user just has to input their desired information and clips and presto! A movie trailer is born.
